The Planning and Zoning Commission has given the green light to the project to construct a new auditorium and music space at Greenwich High School.
The Board of Education had previously approved the $28.87 million budget for the work. The plan, which was approved by the P&Z on Tuesday, will add a choral room to the existing music space, create a new building at the site of the present auditorium, and build a new auditorium with a galleria and seating for 1,325. It also calls for modifications to the site for better traffic flow, including widening driving lanes and extending the west parking lot.
The P&Z approved a final site plan and a special permit to increase the floor area of a new auditorium from 412,945 square feet to 457,879 square feet, enlarge parking lots, and realign vehicle entrances and driving loops.
The next step will be getting funding for the project, which did not make the cut in the 2010-11 capital improvements budget. The Board of Education is hoping to have the project listed in the 2011-12 budget.
Schools Superintendent Sydney Freund was quoted in The Greenwich Time Thursday saying the Board of Education will take into consideration nearby residents concerns about the impact the construction work will have on the community. We certainly want to be good neighbors and be respectful of our neighbors, Freund said at Tuesdays P&Z meeting.
