As eager sixth-grade students lined up outside Western Middle School for the first day of classes Tuesday, Terry Starr-Klein was making her start as principal.
Students shuffled into the school led by Assistant Principal Jarret Pepe, who was wielding a megaphone. Starr-Klein stood outside getting ready to address the new crop of students and returning middle school veterans.
"I'm talking about success and my three goals of taking care of self, taking care of others and taking care of the environment," she said. "I'm introducing a new rubric for class success because Western Middle School students all have class."
Starr-Klein said she planned to encourage students to take advantage of extracurricular activities as a method for success outside the classroom. "We hope this will be a successful year, because after all, it's the students who make a school successful."
