It's the highest honor a college or university can receive for volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The program is managed by the CNCS, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.

The Honor Roll was launched in 2006 and highlights the role colleges and universities play in civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve positive results in local communities.

Norwalk Community College was one of 767 institutions to earn the honor

This is the fourth time the school has been recognized, alongside 2010, 2012 and 2013 honors.

The college’s Service Learning program allows students to earn college credits while volunteering at local agencies and community organizations.

Examples include a community based after-school program at NCC for at-risk middle school students, an independent Lifetime Learners organization that offers non-credit course for seniors at NCC and an Off Campus at Meadow Ridge program that offers non-credit courses at a senior residence in Redding.

Tax preparation services also are offered annually by IRS-certified student volunteers to low- and moderate- income taxpayers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

NCC student clubs collected food and personal care items for a Day of Thanks in November to support area organizations that help those in need.

Students also volunteered at the Norwalk Senior Center South, the Norwalk Housing Authority, Carver Foundation of Norwalk and Person-to-Person in Darien.
