Norwalk Board Releases Report On Classroom Sizes

NORWALK, Conn. – Fears were stoked this summer as both parents and schoolchildren alike were told that massive cuts in the Board of Education budget would likely result in more children being squeezed into Norwalk's classrooms.

How did that work out? According to information in the packet for Tuesday's BOE meeting, the board is considering corrective action for classrooms that have a large number of students. The report recommends adding five teachers and four aides.

Here is the list of problematic classroom sizes as of Oct. 9, along with recommended corrective action:

Brookside Elementary School:

  • Kindergarten: 23, 22, 22. Finding: Three classroom aides.
  • Second Grade: 23, 22, 22.
  • Third Grade: 26, 25, 25. Recommendation: Add one teacher.
  • Fourth Grade: 25, 25, 24. Recommendation: Add one teacher.
  • Fifth Grade: 25, 25, 24. Recommendation: Add one aide.

Columbus Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 23, 23.
  • First Grade: 23, 23. Finding: two classroom aides.
  • Second Grade: 23, 22. Finding: two classroom aides; one is assigned to second grade in the morning, fifth grade in the afternoon.

Cranbury Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 23, 22, 22. Finding: four classroom aides.

Fox Run Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 23, 22. Finding: three classroom aides.

Jefferson Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 22, 22, 22. Finding: four classroom aides (one is a special ed aide.)
  • Third Grade: 25, 24, 24, 24

Kendall Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 24, 24, 24, 24. Finding: four classroom aides. Recommended corrective action: Add one teacher.
  • First Grade: 24, 24, 24, 23. Finding: four classroom aides. Recommended corrective action: Add one teacher.

Marvin Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 22, 22. Finding: three classroom aides.
  • Third Grade: 26, 25, 25. Recommended corrective action: Add one teacher.

Naramake Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 22, 22, 22. Finding: four classroom aides.
  • Second Grade: 23, 23, 22. Corrective action: Add one aide.

Rowayton Elementary School

  • Third Grade: 25, 25, 25. Corrective action: Add one aide
  • Fourth Grade: 25, 25, 24.

Tracey Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 24, 23, 23. Finding: three classroom aides.
  • Second Grade: 23, 23, 22. Recommended corrective action: Add one aide.

Wolfpit Elementary School

  • Kindergarten: 23, 23, 23. Finding: three classroom aides.

Classroom sizes at the middle schools and high schools do not exceed the limit of 28 students, the document says.
