Norwalk Board Of Education Eliminates February Recess

NORWALK, Conn. – To make up some of the time lost by the closure of schools following Hurricane Sandy, the Norwalk Board of Education this week voted to eliminate the February break, which was scheduled for Feb. 15 to 19.

The district will still observe President’s Day on Feb. 18, but Feb. 15, a Friday, and Feb. 19, a Tuesday, will now be school days.

Additionally, the board decided to make March 22 a full school day, instead of a half day. The day was originally split in half to allow for a professional development session for staff. That professional development day will now be tacked onto the end of the school year after students are off to summer vacation.

The last day of school will be on June 19, according to new Board of Education Chairperson Michael Lyons, provided the district does not lose more snow days. Norwalk schools were closed for six days following Hurricane Sandy and had five snow days left prior to the elimination of the February recess.

“We very much want to preserve the April vacation, and so far that remains untouched,” Lyons said. The April recess will begin after school on Friday, April 12, and school will resume on Monday, April 22.
