This is a letter sent to Greenwich High School parents by Headmaster Chris Winters on Tuesday evening:
Dear GHS Parents,
Normally around this time of year, Im writing to welcome you back to school. I look forward to doing that in the next couple of weeks. This letter is to deliver some different, less pleasing news. As a result of unexpected delays in the work being done on our parking lots, we will all be inconvenienced as the school year begins.
Please note that parking at Greenwich High School will be restricted to staff only for the start of school. At the GHS-MISA Building Committee meeting this morning, it was confirmed that the removal of the contaminated piles of dirt in the west (back) parking lot and the restoration of that lot for use will take at least 3-4 weeks.
Therefore, student parking will not be permitted until further notice. We are working on plans to ensure bus capacity and to enhance traffic control measures. Please encourage students to take the bus in order to avoid a backup in drop-off and pickup lines. If you must drive your children to school, please allow extra time. We will not delay the start of the school day because of traffic. Please note that parking on private property without permission will result in ticketing and/or towing.
The investigation, removal and remediation of the contaminated soil is overseen by federal, state and local environmental and health officials, as well as two entities separate from the contractor licensed to remove and remediate the site. There will be ongoing air monitoring to ensure the safety of all students, staff and workers during the soil-removal process.
The GHS-MISA Building Committee is expecting more results and reports from the environmental consultants by weeks end. Please look for a more detailed update from the district on the environmental evaluation that is in process at GHS later this week.
