Brunswick Student Starts Campaign To Get Drivers To Idle Less

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — New Canaan’s Reed Schultz, a student at the Brunswick School in Greenwich, has launched a public education campaign to get drivers to idle their cars less.

“The time is now for all drivers, be they of cars, trucks, buses or vans, to take a turn in the right direction, and stop wasteful idling,” Schultz said. “Of course there are always times that one will need to idle, for example when stopped at a light or in heavy traffic. But there are countless other times that people are idling and don’t understand the negative consequences of their actions.”

Schultz started the initiative, American Idle Less, as a way to improve the environment by raising awareness about a simple step that can have a big impact, the website said. Idling less would also decrease fuel costs for drivers, the website said.

The American Lung Association’s State of the Air Report recently gave Fairfield County a “F” for ozone and a “C” for particle pollution. The county, however, dropped off the Top 25 most polluted counties in the country, finishing at 29th overall compared with 24th last year.

“I applaud Reed for raising awareness about this critical public health issue, and the simple steps we can all take reduce harmful and unnecessary air pollution.  It is particularly rewarding to see young people like Reed not only identifying ways to improve their communities, but taking concrete action to make meaningful change. Reed should be an inspiration to us all," U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said in the release.
