Maureen Miller Named To Somers Education Hall Of Fame

SOMERS, N.Y. – Serving nearly 10 years on the Somers Board of Education isn’t enough to satisfy Maureen Miller’s hunger to improve education in the community.

The Somers Education Foundation has selected Maureen Miller as one of three of its inductees into the group's Hall of Fame.

Miller is one of three people who have made a lasting educational impact on the Town of Somers who will be inducted into the Somers Education Foundation Hall of Fame during the group’s annual Gala and Auction on April 27 at Putnam National Golf Club.

Miller is a 17-year resident of Somers who spent nine years on the Somers Board of Education, including three years as vice president and one as president. While on the board, she helped the district undergo significant renovations to the schools and hire a new superintendent while passing a budget every year.

Miller said she never wanted the recognition or fame, just the continued improvement of education in the district.

“I think education is the center of our community and that’s how I grew up and I want the children in our community to have the same thing,” she said Thursday.

“I was also lucky to work with such a great group of people who always remembered that this was about the kids first.”

Miller, along with her husband, Rob, helped to run the Somers Youth Sports Organization football and lacrosse programs for 10 years. The two helped grow both programs from a few dozen members into more than 250 each.

“I couldn’t have done it without my husband,” Miller said. “When I first started on the board, my youngest was in first grade and I always had backup when I would run to a meeting. People would ask me how I could do it for so long, but it’s because I started off with a great group of people and I was infected by their enthusiasm.”

At one point after her tenure with the Somers Board of Education, Miller considered retiring from her work in education. But she couldn’t resist the opportunities to help more children.

“I thought I was going to ride off into the sunset, but I was asked to be a trustee at Trinity-Pawling School where my son attends and I had to say yes,” Miller said. “I think the thing that keeps me coming back is I just can’t say no to education.”

Miller said she is also spending a majority of her time tutoring students working toward their GEDs through the Westchester Library System.

“I really enjoy it because I’m able to help kids who haven’t had those opportunities,” she said. “It’s been really rewarding, and I love it.”
