MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck High School students Zach Nagin and Matt Wassong recently won top awards at two film festivals.
Junior Zach Nagin won second place overall at the Future Filmmakers Festival held at the Pelham Picture House and sophomore Matt Wassong won first overall at the Greenwich Film Festival, according to a release. Both students participated in the video elective at Mamaroneck High School.
Wassong's film, "Project Regrow," is a science fiction narrative taking place in the year 2027, when world hunger has reached catastrophic proportions and a company is working to find a cure. The film takes the viewer inside the lab to see how events unfold for test 275 on day 456 of the experiment, according to the release.
“I love to write stories and see them translated onto the screen,” said Wassong. “To be completely honest I did not think that I was going to win. All of the other films were absolutely amazing.”
Nagin’s documentary,"Dos Caminos," featured the Dual Language English-Spanish Kindergarten program at Mamaroneck Avenue School.
Nagin said the experience winning the award at the Future Filmmakers Festival was “really, really, nice and overall just a happy experience,” according to the release.
“The video room feels like a second home to me," Nagin said. "The sense of safety, hard work, kindness, and creativity I always feel there is near incomparable. I've learned so much in the program, both video production related and more. Whether it's how to cover up a little popping noise at the end of an audio track or how to interview someone so that they give you a decent answer, I've learned it all from the video production teacher, Ms. (Emily) Dombroff. Honestly nearly everything and anything I know about film is a result of her.”
