Hurricane Sandy Closes Greenwich Public, Private Schools

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich public schools will be closed Monday, Oct. 29, Tuesday, Oct. 30 and Wednesday Oct. 31, due to Hurricane Sandy, a statement released by Greenwich Superintendant of Schools Dr. William S. McKersie said on Sunday afternoon.

The Greenwich Public Schools will communicate updates as necessary via the school system's website , local media outlets and Parentlink, the district’s mass email and telephone communications system. An update will be sent on Wednesday, Oct. 31 by 2 p.m. as to the status of school for the rest of the week.

“As the forecasts are predicting severe wind, rain, flooding and widespread power outages, it is likely that the schools will be closed for some number of days. We felt it prudent to announce the closing of schools today, while access to communications is still available and so that families can make plans for the care of their school-aged children," McKersie said in the statement.

He continued, "While it is impossible to predict how many days may be necessary to close the schools, based on the information we have at this time, we believe that we will need at least until Wednesday to see through the impact of the storm and make decisions about the status of re-opening the schools.”

UPDATE, 4 p.m.: Greenwich Academy, Brunswick School and Convent of the Sacred Heart will also all be closed through Wednesday.
