A longtime resident of Greenwich, Lichtenfeld has been with the school system for five years. He was hired in 2009 as the managing director of operations for the district. At that time, he had recently retired from the Katonah-Lewisboro Schools in New York after 29 years, serving as the district’s superintendent for the last eight years.

In 2011, Lichtenfeld became director of human resources for the Greenwich Public Schools.

“I commend Bob for his tireless service to the public schools and the Town of Greenwich. He has brought important rigor to the Department of Human Resources, building strong relationships with all bargaining units and the town’s human resources department," Superintendent of Schools William S. McKersie said.

"Bob is known for standing up for what is best for our students and ensuring that the staff is well supported. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Lichtenfeld began his career in education in New York City as an elementary and special education teacher, and ultimately an assistant principal. He left the New York City schools in 1972 to become principal of Rye Country Day School in Rye, N.Y.

He returned to the public school system in 1978 as principal of Lewisboro Elementary School, thus beginning his 29-year tenure with the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. From 1980 to 1984, was principal for John Jay Junior High School, and then as assistant superintendent for the district for 16 years from 1984 to 1999, when he became superintendent.

Lichtenfeld received his bachelor's degree from New York University and his master's in education, master's in educational administration and his doctorate of education from Columbia University Teachers College.
