This is the second time the research-based S4 student workshop series has been hosted by Whitby School. The workshops foster academic achievement by teaching students key study strategies that help them learn while reducing stress.

The workshop is open to all area students who are entering grades 5 through 8.

Classes will be held on Monday through Friday, July 22 through July 25, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Whitby School, 969 Lake Ave. The workshops are taught by accredited teachers with class sizes limited to 15 students. The small class size allows for more focused and individualized attention to be given to each participating student, according to the release.

The S4 program is founded on educational research and evidence-based studies. Its highly interactive approach is designed to clearly demonstrate how to apply students’ own curriculum to the strategies they learn. S4’s workshops are continually refreshed and updated to stay relevant to students’ academic experiences.

“Learning proven methods for studying and schoolwork management can be of immeasurable value to students, and summer is the perfect time for students to step back and recalibrate their approach to their studies,” Whitby Director of Enrichment and Co-Curricular Programs Jim Irzyk said in a statement. “We look forward to giving students the opportunity to learn these critical skills for success, before the new school year.”

The S4 program is specifically designed to provide students with the skills and strategies needed for academic confidence, motivation and preparation, particularly as they move up to the next grade level, where academic workload  increases, independent work encouraged, and expectation rise.

Students in the S4 workshop will learn study skills for time management, organization and executive functioning, including: goal setting, how to use a planner, notetaking methods, self advocacy, active reading and listening techniques, understanding main ideas and important details, using visuals, summarizing to learn, and long-term project and test preparation strategies.

S4 supplies all materials, including that for at-home support. The 7.5 hour 5-session workshop costs $395. For more information contact S4 at (203) 307-5455 or e-mail info@S4StudySkills.com, or click here to register online.
