The school is hoping to plant a garden that can be used as a teaching and learning spot where students can see the connection between how food is grown and the resources needed to produce it, according to the project's Kickstarter page.

"It's unbelievable how many students will ask how food gets to the grocery store and where their food comes from," a Western Middle School faculty member said in a statement. "I really would love to do more lessons with the children on this engaging subject using a hands-on approach that helps them understand these issues in a more critical manner."

The school's goal is to build eight raised beds with organic soil and a seating area that will be fully enclosed with sturdy fencing to protect the vegetables and the growing areas. The school also hopes to have the children harvest the food and eat it in their lunch in a "garden to plate learning program."

Western Middle School is hoping to raise $10,000 for the project. As of Friday morning, 28 people have contributed a total of $2,361.
