Mersereau is one of 620 students nationally who received a National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship.

"I'm honored to receive the ... scholarship to study Arabic and reach outside my comfort zone," Mersereau said in a press release. "I am thrilled to see for myself the complexities and the beauty of this unique Middle Eastern culture."

When she returns to Greenwich Academy in the fall, she will be the student body president at the private high school.

Mersereau is interested in a career in international affairs. She has previously studied at a public school in France and provided community service on the small Caribbean island of Marie Galante.
