The school board voted unanimously at its meeting Tuesday to extend McKersie's contract until June 30, 2017.
He became superintendent in 2012 during a tumultuous period after the resignation of superintendent Sidney Freund in May 2011. At the time, Freund was the fourth superintendent in 11 years in Greenwich.
Roger Lullow replaced Freund as interim superintendent until McKersie took over in 2012.
That stability under McKersie was noted by school board Chairman Barbara O'Neil.
"This will be the first time in 12 years that a superintendent has committed to stay beyond the initial three-year contract. We are gratified that we have this opportunity to stay the course with Dr. McKersie," she said in a press release.
McKersie said he was "humbled" by the vote of confidence in him.
"I am humbled by the support from the Board of Education to extend my service as superintendent of the Greenwich Public Schools. In the last two years that I have lived and worked in Greenwich, I have become deeply invested in the schools and in the community," he said.
"My commitment is to do all I can to have Greenwich known nationally as a school system that accelerates learning for all students, provides robust artistic, musical, athletic and social programming, promotes civic dedication and service, and fosters in all staff and students an unwavering focus on compassion and caring."
Before coming to Greenwich, McKersie served as the associate superintendent for academic excellence for the schools in the Archdiocese of Boston from 2008 to 2012 and as the associate dean for development and alumni relations for Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education from 2004 to 2008.
McKersie began his career as an admissions officer and faculty member of the Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield, Mass.
McKersie currently earns $226,000 per year that will jump to $232,554 for the upcoming 2014-2015 year. The 2015-2016 salary will be negotiated but won't be less than $232,554.
The annuity and deferred compensation is $15,000 per year which is no change from the previous year.
He receives a $3,000 per month housing allowance and a $275 per month car allowance, an increase of $500 and $25 respectively from the contract he signed in 2012. McKersie also receives health, life insurance, sick days and vacation benefits similar to other administrators. He also receives support for professional development and memberships to professional organizations.
?McKersie lives in Greenwich with his wife, Katherine, a Connecticut native, and their two daughters. McKersie’s two teenage sons live in Boston.
