GREENWICH, Conn. – Passing the 2013-14 operating budget is the top item on the agenda for Thursday evening's Greenwich School Board meeting at at 7 p.m. Greenwich High School. But discussion about school security is likely to dominate the public hearing portion of the meeting after Friday's tragedy in Newtown .

"We will be reviewing safety and security measures with the town and the Greenwich Police Department to determine what improvements can and should be made," Superintendent William McKersie said in a statement released Monday evening .

Meanwhile, the school budget is set to be passed after a little more than a month of deliberations and adjustments.

The school board was largely in agreement at the previous meeting, coming close to settling on a $2.74 million, or 2 percent. The proposed budget focuses in part on implementing and improving technology in the classrooms, while cutting nearly $1 million at the administrative level.

"It protects the classroom, so I think it's a fair budget," board Vice Chairman Barbara O'Neil said at the Dec. 13 meeting. "We can tinker forever, but I think we should go with the 2 percent [increase]."

The school board has also yet to decide on how to make up any snow days this winter. Hurricane Sandy already forced the district to use up all five makeup days built into the calendar. At the first meeting after Hurricane Sandy, board members said they would like to resolve the issue before the holiday break but the discussion about security may delay the calendar decision further.

The school board also plans to recognize the Greenwich High girls varsity swimming and diving team after it won the Class LL state championship in November.
