The organization held its 43rd annual awards ceremony Thursday at Greenwich High School.

The scholarships, based on financial need, totaled $544,900 - the largest scholarship total in the organization’s history.

“The Greenwich Scholarship Association facilitates the generosity of more than 100 local sponsors and it is this remarkable generosity that changes the lives of young people,” Marie Hertzig, president of the Greenwich Scholarship Association, said in a press release.

“Every year I am convinced that I’ve seen the best pool of young people we have ever worked with. And every year I am surprised anew at the academic, athletic and extracurricular achievements of Greenwich students.”

Historically, about 94 percent of the scholarship recipients continue college studies after their first year.

The average scholarship recipient is in the top third of their graduating class, involved in multiple extracurricular activities, and earns some money through off-campus jobs. Most scholarship applicants have received a financial aid package from the college they plan to attend.
