Greenwich Public Schools To Reopen On Wednesday

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich public schools will reopen on a regular schedule Wednesday after Hurricane Sandy closed schools for six days and Election Day.

Superintendent of Schools William S. McKersie made the announcement at 2 p.m. Tuesday, despite the threat of another potentially strong storm hitting Greenwich on Wednesday.

"Based on consultation with the Town’s Emergency Operations Center and Greenwich Police Chief Heavey, the remaining downed lines are all related to communications, not power," McKersie said in a statement. "All known pedestrian trouble spots are being addressed today, and tomorrow's storm will bring some snow at roughly 9:00 am and then turn to rain – none of which will be enough to close schools."

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, 1,575 customers of CL&P in Greenwich still did not have power, about 5 percent of the town.

McKersie cautioned parents that some downed wires still remain throughout Greenwich. He recommended that parents to check their child's walking route to school or their bus stop to make sure it is free of any downed wires.

"We ask for patience from all concerned over the next couple of days," McKersie said. "The reopening of school will no doubt have some rough spots with transportation, phones and internet, if not other items."
