Greenwich Literacy Program Needs Volunteers

GREENWICH, Conn. – Volunteers are needed for the Greenwich Public Schools’ one-on-one Reading Champions student tutoring program.

From its small start as a pilot program at North Mianus School, Reading Champions has grown so that it now operates at 11 elementary schools and after-school sites with a roster of over 100 tutors. The trained volunteers have worked individually with nearly 370 students. The sessions take place once a week, and the focus is on improving reading fluency, reading comprehension and word use and identification.

The program was initiated in fall 2008 by United Way Youth Services Coordinator Jenny Byxbee and retired district social worker Joan Lowe.

This year, Reading Champions is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greenwich and the Women's Fellowship of the First Congregational Church working in partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools and Greenwich United Way Youth Services Council.

Volunteers are key to the success of the program. For an application, visit the United Way online , email Joan Lowe or call Jenny Byxbee at 203-869-2221.
