Recently named the 2014 CT Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Schools, Sackey has been with the Greenwich Public Schools at Western Middle School since 2008. He has been an integral part of shaping the Special Education department at Western.

Sackey chairs the Safe School Climate Committee and in this capacity, has helped to promote an environment of respect for staff and students throughout the school. In addition, Sackey has taken on the role of adviser to a group of student leaders that developed and delivered presentations on the topic of bullying prevention at statewide leadership conferences.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked in a district such as Greenwich," Sackey said in a statement. "The past six years have been an incredible learning experience for me. I was fortunate to work at Western Middle School with inspirational teachers, amazing children, and supportive parents. I have learned from some of the best administrators in the country.  My time here has been one I will always remember and I am confident that Western Middle School is in incredible hands with the leadership of Gordon Beinstein and Tom Healy."

Sackey began teaching in 2000 in special education at the Donald Hertz School (P.S. 83) in the Bronx. In 2005, he became a regional instructional support specialist for the New York City Department of Education, working with teachers, assistant principals and principals on implementing best practices designed to improve instruction. He also supervised instruction of special education for twelve schools in the region.

In 2007, Sackey became the assistant principal/director for the Center for Applied Science and Technology at the James M. Kieran School (P.S. 123) in the Bronx, responsible for supervising the instruction of science, math and special education. He also worked with the school’s Data Inquiry and Child Study Teams to monitor student performance and use data to address students’ individual needs.

"Ever the professional, Al has helped to create a culture of respect for students, staff and parents at Western in his six years here," Western Middle School Principal Gordon Beinstein said in the statement. "While I have only had the pleasure of working with Al this past year, I quickly gained the utmost respect for his work, and I value our friendship. Since he will only be a few miles down I-95, I am hopeful that this relationship can continue. Norwalk has made a wise choice.”

Sackey received a bachelor of science degree in justice and policy studies from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. in 1998; a master of science degree in special education from Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y. in 2003; and a master of science degree in school administration and supervision from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. in 2004.
