Greenwich Academy Sings Its Way Around the World

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich Academy Lower School students showed off their foreign language skills, singing a repertoire of songs in nine languages at a holiday concert.

The girls sang their way around the world, beginning with the French carol “Un Flambeau, Jeanette Isabella,” which they sang alongside lighted lanterns. In addition to French and English, they sang in Czech, German, Hebrew, Mandarin and Spanish, showing a mastery of both Catalan and Andalucian dialects.

One of the last songs, “Peace, Peace,” included a demonstration of American Sign Language. Lower School girls played recorders, sleigh bells, a gong, wind chimes and violin for “El Cant dels Ocells.” The grand finale was an illuminated performance of “One Candle, One Flame” in the darkened Massey Theater.

Director Dianne Ellis thanked her colleagues from all three divisions who helped in the preparation and performance of the program, including Middle School teacher Natalie Lin, who helped with the Chinese carol, “Stars of Ice,” which was sung in Mandarin.
