GREENWICH, Conn. -- More than 800 Hamilton Avenue and Riverside school students in Greenwich received an iPad Air this past week as part of Phase I of the district's Digital Learning Environment implementation plan, according to a district release.
The deployment of these devices has positioned Greenwich Public Schools to realize its vision for creating a personalized learning environment for every student, preparing them for success in school, and as they pursue higher education and careers.
"Thanks to the incredibly hard work of teachers, administrators and students, and valuable feedback from parents and community leaders, Greenwich took another big step forward this week with digital learning," Greenwich Superintendent of Schools William McKersie said in a statement. "All students and teachers at Hamilton Avenue and Riverside now have iPad Airs and are demonstrating for the rest of the district how digital tools can be blended into teaching and learning on a school-wide basis to help all our students excel."
McKersie added that the district closely "monitoring, supporting and cheering" the students and teacher who are implementing the new technology initiative.
In April 2013, the Greenwich Public Schools launched a three-year, three-phase "Digital Learning Environment Initiative" to advance the transformation of teaching and learning. The digital learning environment is designed to provide teachers with the resources necessary to both innovate and differentiate instruction according to the needs of each student for students. The initiative also has a goal to personalize each student's learning.
"The entire Riverside School community has been energized over the past few days as iPad distribution to every student has taken place," Riverside Principal Christopher Weiss said in the statement. "The children are thrilled to have this opportunity to experience an enhanced learning environment that allows for personalized learning as well as interactive group learning."
Hamilton Avenue School principal Cynthia Womack echoed Weiss' enthusiasm for the new technology in the statement.
"As a staff, we are excited with the endless possibilities," she said in the statement. "We look forward to increased and improved student engagement and the ability to really transform teaching and learning as we know it."
