Cardinal Stadium Reopens at Greenwich High

GREENWICH, Conn. — Greenwich High School’s Cardinal Stadium reopened Monday night after state environmental officials gave the OK after testing contaminated soil that was found on school grounds.

All school fields were closed after testing revealed high levels of polycholinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in the soil on some of the field. At Cardinal Stadium, traces of arsenic, lead and pesticides had been found but no PCBs.

Earlier this month, the district said opening a field would depend on input from officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the state Department of Public Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

District and town officials are making backup plans for all programs that use the other fields. Greenwich High is expected to open for the 2011-12 school year on time.
