PARAMUS, N.J. -- Viola R. Selikowitz, 99, of Paramus, died Sept. 9.
She was born Aug. 17, 1917, and raised in Jersey City. She graduated from UCLA in 1939 and worked for the U.S. government at Newark Airport (Air Services Port Command Headquarters).
She enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served as a chief specialist 3. After discharge, she worked at the Veterans Administration until her marriage to Simon Selikowitz in 1947.
The couple moved to Glen Rock in 1951, where they raised a family and became founding members of the Glen Rock Jewish Center. She also served as the first president of the Jewish Center's women's club and volunteered at the local blood bank.
Selikowitz returned to school to earn her teaching certification and taught science, biology, and physics at Central High School in Paterson. While teaching, she earned her MA in guidance and counseling from Seton Hall University and was a much loved guidance counselor at John F Kennedy High School in Paterson until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her parents; three siblings; and husband, Simon.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne; son, Michael and his wife Mindy; daughter, Carole Goldberger and her husband Alan; grandson, Paul; granddaughter, Emily Lo Giudice and her husband Carl; and great-grandchildren, Joseph and Kayla.
