Elena Skye at Hoboken Craft Fair

As if there already wasn’t enough reason to hit the Hoboken Craft Fair, Elena Skye is there today, meeting and greeting shoppers. Elena has become a solid presence on this side of the Hudson, at times with her incomparable Demolition String Band, as funky an alt country/honky tonk outfit as you’ll find.

Fitting, then, that she’d promote the Craft Fair, held in Hoboken’s historic City Hall, which provides a creative alternative to packed malls, crowded highways and chintzy gifts.

Born in Chicago, Skey fell in love with bluegrass and country as a kid, played in her first band when she was 15, then moved to the area a decade ago.

One day, North Carolina native Boo Reiners walked into a bookstore Elena co-owned and managed, and a musical partnership began that still lasts today.

With Reiners blazing on guitar and Skye hitting the high notes, the DSB has created a distinctive sound perfect for honky tonks like the Rodeo Bar — where they’ll be performing tomorrow afternoon.

They’re big on tributes, and have performed sets of songs by Creedence, the Monkees and even Glen Campbell. Those sitting in have included the brilliant Laura Cantrell, Fiona McBain & Tony Leone of Ollabelle, Jennifer Jackson, Freedy Johnston, and Ryan Adams.

Tomorrow night Elena and Boo will be at Maxwell’s, as part of a benefit concert for Terry Karydes, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, with Freedy Johnston, The Individuals, Dennis Diken with Bell Sound, Tammy Faye Starlite, Kate Jacobs Band, The Schramms, The Guitar Bar All-Stars, George Usher, Karen Kuhl Band, Antietam + DJ Selector.
