Staples Boys Lacrosse Thumped by Darien, 13-3

WESTPORT, Conn. — Just a few days after being on the good side of a blowout, the Staples High boys’ lacrosse team got a firsthand look at the bad side. Staples managed just eight shots on goal against a Darien team that looked in midseason form, falling to the Blue Wave, 13-3.

Five Blue Wave players scored multiple goals, and Case Matheis and Bobby Weaver each netted hat tricks against Staples. Darien had built a 6-0 advantage before Greg Strauss finally put Staples on the board late in the second quarter.

“Darien does so well with their fast breaks. They move the ball well and if you’re unsettled against them, that’s when you’re going to get in trouble,” Staples head coach Paul McNulty said. “They’re fast and they’re on you all the time on ground balls – that’s the sign of a good team.”

Staples struggled to create scoring quality opportunities all afternoon and was held to three shots on goal in the second half. Two of those shots were goals by Joey Zelkowitz.

“We couldn’t really beat anybody straight up, one-on-one today,” McNulty said. “But we played them in a scrimmage last week and I thought we actually did much better today than we did in that scrimmage.”

Staples (1-1) had crushed Trinity Catholic, 17-0, earlier in the week. Staples will try to bounce back on Tuesday when the Wreckers host Greenwich for a 4:30 p.m. game. The game will be played at Wakeman Field at Bedford Middle School.
