NORWALK, Conn. Kristen Solice knows what people are doing to stay cool: they're letting her staff do the sweating. "It's been a busy day," Solice said at Norwalk Pizza and Pasta. "People don't want to leave the lovely air conditioned offices that they're in."
Solice, wife of the restaurant's owner, said about 20 to 25 orders for pizza had come in during the "busy" lunch rush. "It's a big cheese and veggie day," she said. "People are trying to eat light."
The temperature outside the restaurant at 236 East Ave. was 90 degrees, weather conditions The Weather Channel labeled as "dangerous heat." The temperature inside the restaurant's kitchen wasn't much better, even though the air conditioning was on full blast. But what can you expect with a pizza oven set to 500 degrees? "The air conditioning doesn't help that," she said. "It gets hotter the farther back you go (into the kitchen). After all day it gets warm. You have sweat dripping."
Andres Santiago agreed it was hot as he worked a fryolater set at 375 to 400 degrees. Delivery drivers Terrence Newman and Carlos Garcia were glad they have air conditioning in their cars. Garcia said he knew what people are doing to cope with the heat: "They're spending more money, on air conditioning."
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through 9 p.m. A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours.
The low temperature is expected to be 69 degrees tonight. Tomorrow a high near 85 degrees is expected.
