Yorktown Campers Scream for Ice Cream

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Though it may have been 'mismatch day' at Yorktown Stage, there was nothing mismatched about the weather and the camper’s desire for ice cream.

Hordes of Yorktown Stage campers lined up the steps leading form the Jack DeVito Memorial Field to the ice cream truck Tuesday waiting with singles in hand to purchase their favorite ice cream.

As temperatures flirted with 90 degrees, the campers were more than happy to take a big bite into a huge popsicle. The heat, however, didn’t stop these campers from appreciating the summer weather.

“Summer is my favorite season,” said camp counselor, Patrick Winton, 15.

“Mine, too,” chimed in 12-year-old camper Laurunce Rosenthal. “But that’s probably just because my birthday is in the summer—but I like the weather too.”

Winton and Rosenthal were the first in line to get their lunch—hot dogs with a side of ice cream before a huge line of ice cream wanting campers filed behind them.

One woman standing in the parking lot of the track said getting ice cream from a truck is different than just going to the store.

“It’s just a treat for them,” she said. “When my kids were younger there were Mr. Softee trucks that would drive up the street for ice cream. This is just such a treat for them—especially on a day like today.”

Rosenthal placed exact change on the counter purchasing hot dogs for other campers, before placing her own order.

“One popsicle please,” she said, forcing forward her own cash on the counter. With the wrapper only half discarded, Rosenthal took a big bite into her prized summer treat.
