Whitby School Graduates Without Power

Whitby School’s class of 2011 was in the spotlight, literally, during its graduation ceremony last week. Because of the widespread outages, the proceedings were held under a spotlight powered by a portable generator.

Patricia Franklin, Whitby’s board chair, welcomed the audience and discussed how the graduates have developed and grown as learners and achievers during their time at Whitby, the first Montessori school in the nation.

The generator was also used to power audio and video equipment and a portable air-conditioner to cool the gymnasium.

Having each graduate speak is a tradition at Whitby, and a reflection on the school’s focus on personal development and communication skills. Even with the dim lighting, the 15 graduates brightened the room by giving an insightful speech on their Whitby experience.

The students said how welcoming they found the Whitby community and how the small class sizes helped them learn. They also thanked their instructors for “teaching me to reach for the stars.”

A commencement address was given by Jeremy Jelliffe, a Whitby class of 2000 graduate, who recounted how the school’s “Whitby Spirit” made it a special experience. He spoke of all the extraordinary times he and his family had within the community.

Congratulations to the Whitby Class of 2011: Christian James Sposta, Elettra Baldi, Samuel Barrett McClung Jelliffe, Darien Scott Pierce, Jacopo Baldi, Elise Rene Mason, Jarrett Kepner Horne, Eric Thomas Passarelli, Emma Louise Citron, Blake Austin Reinken, Emma Helene Heerdt, Alexander Broekhuijse, José C. Maita Jr., Caroline Holloway and Clark Alexander Vazquez.
