Thursday began in celebration of the seniors on both the New Canaan Rams and the Westhill Vikings. Unfortunately for the Rams (6-11, 5-10 FCIAC) the day did not end in celebration. Westhill won 9-0, improving their record to 16-0 (14-0 FCIAC).
Before the game, Westhill seniors Nicole Delmazio, Jennifer Joseph and Julianne Vincent were presented with flowers for their participation with the Vikings. For the Rams it marked one of the last home games for Emily Ely and Kristen Hogan, who also received flowers and were accompanied by their parents.
Once the ceremony ended and the game began, Jennifer Joseph took control with her arm and her bat. Joseph went the distance for the Vikings, striking out five. She only allowed two baserunners to get to third safely. She also had two RBI in the game. "She kept our kids off balance a little bit, but our kids have seen better pitching all year," New Canaan Assistant Coach Lenny Paglialunga said.
First baseman and clean-up hitter Tory Rusch attempted to will her team to victory, going 3-for-4. Her constantly trying to get her team to focus and cheer for their teammates was one of the few bright spots the Rams had.
Pagliunga thinks the young Rams team does not recognize how talented they are yet, and it hurts them on the field. He cited the St. Joseph's game as proof of their talent. "They put Westhill up on a pedestal today, and thought they were so good we could not beat them," Pagliunga said.
The Rams will travel to Trumbull on Monday, May 17.
