If you want to get your feet wet in rowing with co-workers or friends, the Norwalk River Rowing Association invites you to participate in its second annual Community Challenge. Training begins June 1. The race is July 10..
The competition promotes teamwork, community spirit, and camaraderie. Entrants will participate in a six-week program that teaches basic rowing skills and race preparation, culminating in a highly spirited championship race and awards party. Teams can be comprised of local businesses, non-profit organizations, media outlets, social clubs, educators, and public safety professionals. No prior rowing experience is necessary.
"The Community Challenge really exemplifies the diversity and spirit of Norwalk and surrounding communities,'' said Michael Gaylord, the communications chair for the NRRA. "Being on the river, the camaraderie, a competition that's all in good fun -- there's no better way to spend part of your summer. And it's a great way for anyone who's ever thought of rowing to actually get out on the water."
Each participating team benefits from a private NRRA coach during the twice-weekly sessions. Two levels of competition accommodate rowers new to the sport and those who have rowing experience. Standard practices times are in the evening. However, teams have the option to create a customized practice schedule. Teams are made up of either five people for a quad (four sculling rowers and a back-up rower) or ten people for an eight (eight sweep rowers plus coxswain and a back-up rower). Size is not a barrier winning teams are the result of teamwork, enthusiasm, and determination.
The first annual Community Challenge was held in July 2009 and included teams from Source Marketing, teachers from Brien McMahon High School and Naramake Elementary School, Greenwich Associates, and the pro-social organization Kayak for a Cause.
