Katz voted Monday in favor of bill 6357, which would allow for "marijuana to be used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes," according to a press release Katz's office. Katz also voted for a bill last week that would make public possession of less than 15 grams of marijuana punishable the same as private possession of the same amount. Katz was charged March 14 with unlawful possession of marijuana and issued a ticket to appear in court and later accepted a plea deal to complete 20 hours of community service and stay out of trouble for six months.
"After many discussions with healthcare professionals and the people of my district, as well as hearing the stories of those afflicted with unimaginable pain, I have elected to vote in favor of this legislation," said Katz in a statement. "If we are to believe in the message of limited government and liberty, we must allow doctors to prescribe the painkillers they view as necessary. That's not for government to decide, that's for the physician. It is time to stop acting as though Albany knows better than trained medical professionals."
