Yorktown Town Council Candidate Brackett Urges JV Mall Owners To Renovate

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Rosanne Brackett, a candidate for Yorktown Town Council, urged WP Glimcher, new owner of the Jefferson Valley Mall, to follow through with long-delayed renovation plans in a Change.org petition circulating through the area.

Brackett uploaded the petition on Feb. 4, and almost 1,500 signatures were collected in the first 36 hours

The renovations were approved by the Town Council two years ago at the request of previous owner Simon Properties, who subsequently spun the property off to WP Glimcher.

“I couldn’t sit by any longer and watch the decline of this great asset in our community. We’ve got to do what we can to get this project back on track and moving forward. The success of the JV Mall is vital to the continued health of our community,” said Brackett.

“The mall provides shopping opportunities, employment opportunities and of course, significant tax dollars to the Lakeland School District and to the Town of Yorktown.”

The proposed plans would update the mall, built in 1983, by renovating the former theater space, and modifying the food court to add a new entrance on the Route 6 side of the mall.

Other additions include a new entrance for the Lee Boulevard side, and new signage on the mall's exterior.

“The JV Mall is in a downward spiral,” Brackett said. “If something isn’t done soon, we’ll lose it forever. Once lost, we may never be able to replace it. We want to do what we can to save the mall.”

Brackett's efforts include conversations with Simon Properties, currently managing the mall, and the corporate offices of WP Glimcher. Her hopes are that the petition will show that the community wants to work with the company.
