The White House press secretary's office released a brief statement Tuesday that Trump acted on the recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

There is growing controversy surrounding Comey's investigation of Hillary Clinton emails and of Russian ties in the Trump administration.

"President Donald J. Trump informed FBI Director James Comey that he has been terminated and removed from office," said a statement from the White House press secretary's office.

Later Tuesday, Blumenthal released a statement comparing the situation to Watergate.

“The need for a special prosecutor is now crystal clear. President Trump has catastrophically compromised the FBI’s ongoing investigation of his own White House’s ties to Russia," Blumenthal said in a statement. "Not since Watergate have our legal systems been so threatened, and our faith in the independence and integrity of those systems so shaken. The only way to restore faith in a nonpolitical, nonpartisan FBI is to appoint an independent special prosecutor,” Blumenthal said.

On Wednesday morning, Trump fought back on Twitter, calling Blumenthal's statement a "joke."

"Watching Senator Richard Blumenthal speak of Comey is a joke. "Richie" devised one of the greatest military frauds in U.S. history. For years, as a pol in Connecticut, Blumenthal would talk of his great bravery and conquests in Vietnam - except he was never there. When caught, he cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness...and now he is judge & jury. He should be the one who is investigated for his acts," Trump said in a series of three Tweets.

Blumenthal responded on Twitter with, "President Trump - Your bullying won’t silence my calls for an independent prosecutor and investigation."

He also said in a series of Tweets, "Now is no time for distraction and deception. Americans want the truth uncovered and lawbreakers held accountable. Need special prosecutor. No question that an independent special prosecutor is necessary. Nothing less than integrity of our justice system at stake."

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) also responded on Twtiter to Trump about the attack on Blumenthal with, "Seriously. This is unhinged."

When Blumenthal was first running for the U.S. Senate in 2010 against Republican Linda McMahon, a controversy erupted over a comment he made in 2008 suggesting that he had served in Vietnam.

Blumenthal, who was enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in the 1970s, acknowledged that he may have misspoken about his service record but denied lying about it.
