Born in Peru to American parents when his father was working for the Ford Foundation and UNICEF, Himes grew up fluent in both Spanish and English and “was raised with an awareness of the unique position of the United States in the world,” the biography on his website says.
In total, 36 U.S. representatives have websites with Spanish content, according to the study. The Spanish-language effort, made mainly by Democratic officials, is being made to reach Spanish-speaking constituents, the study says.
A content analysis of official House websites of the nation’s 434 U.S. representatives found that about one in 12 have websites with Spanish-language content – with Democrats doing so at eight times the rate of Republicans, the Smart Politics analysis says.
The study reportedly found that 31 of 200 Democratic congressmen, or 16 percent, have set aside websites for Spanish-speaking constituents, compared with five of the 234 Republicans in office, or 2 percent.
