Sen. Chris Murphy Of Connecticut Emerges As Possible Clinton VP Pick

Citing campaign coordinators' desire to prioritize demographics over someone from a swing state, USA Today recently named junior U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut as a potential running mate for presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Though Clinton is heavily favored to win the Democratic Party's nomination, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders continues to be competitive and has indicated his intent to remain in the race through the late July party convention in Philadelphia, according to USA Today, which reported that the Clinton camp may be forced to focus on a vice presidential pick who can unify the warring factions of the party.

USA Today named Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren as one "obvious candidate" before floating names like Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Rep. Xavier Becerra of California, Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Murphy.

Reporting on USA Today's Murphy name-drop, the Connecticut Post sought comment from the senator, who was elected to his current position in 2012 after three terms in the House of Representatives. Murphy declined the opportunity to speak on the matter, according to the Post.

U.S. Rep. Jim Hines, who was once Murphy's colleague in the House, called the senator "the future of the Democratic Party," while hailing the idea of a Clinton/Murphy ticket, according to the Post.

Connecticut's GOP Chairman J.R. Romano lampooned the idea of Murphy as a possible vice president, the Post reported.

According to his Senate website, Murphy, 42, lives in Cheshire, Conn., and has two children with wife, Cathy Holahan. He attended Williams College and University of Connecticut Law School.

During his tenure in the Senate, Murphy has served on the Appropriations Committee; the Foreign Relations Committee; the Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee; and the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.

Murphy also is active on Twitter, where he often posts about his political positions and his sons, Owen and Rider. Gun control is among his chief concerns.
