GREENWICH, Conn. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to receive more contributions for his campaign from Greenwich residents than his Democratic opponent. But President Barack Obama is polling higher among likely voters throughout the state.
As of the end of July, Romney had received 1,285 donations to his campaign from Greenwich residents, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Those contributions total $1,897,789. Obama has received 469 donations, totaling $420,440.
According to a recent poll by Quinnipiac University, more Connecticut residents support Obama in the election than Romney. Fifty-two percent of likely voters say they would vote for Obama, while 45 percent say they would vote for Romney. But 12 percent of Obama supporters and 12 percent of Romney supporters say they might change their minds.
Women polled say they support Obama, 59 percent to 38 percent, while men support Romney, 53 percent to 45 percent. Obama leads all income brackets except those making more than $100,000 per year, who are split 49-49 between the two candidates. Independents support Romney, 49 percent to 47 percent.
Greenwich Republicans overwhelmingly supported Romney during the presidential primary in April. Romney received 1,437 of the 1,783 votes cast, or 80.6 percent. Since winning the primary, he has received 419 contributions, totaling $540,727.
The economy is the most important issue among the 1,472 people polled by Quinnipiac. Medicare was also extremely important. Of those polled, 49 percent believe Romney would be better for the economy, compared with 44 percent who believe Obama would be better. Fifty-one percent believe Obama would be better for Medicare, compared with 41 percent who believe Romney would be better.
