In particular, Tesei criticized the proposal by Democratic Board of Estimate & Taxation members Randy Huffman and Sean Goldrick that the town trim its police service by 12 officers through attrition over the next couple of years as a cost-saving measure. The two Democrats said the town has too many police on a per capita basis compared to similar communities. (Read about their plan here on the Daily Voice.)
However, Tesei bluntly disagreed with them, he told his audience at the Millbrook Club.
"That is just asinine. It is asinine to mess with something that is successful," said Tesei, who didn't name either Goldrick or Huffman.
Referring in general to current world events, Tesei said Greenwich is home to many high-profile people and business leaders and said the town is "an attractive target" as he criticized the Democrats' proposal.
"We live in one of the safest communities in the country and that is not by accident," he said to his audience. "That is by design."
The event was sponsored by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce.
Tesei touched on some bright spots in the town, including its public education system. He said that Greenwich High School made a massive jump in Newsweek magazine's high school ratings moving, up to 168th position from its 573rd position the year before.
Also in attendance were fellow selectmen Dave Theis and Drew Marzullo, and two members of Greenwich's Hartford delegation, state Sen. L. Scott Frantz, R-36th District, and state Rep. Livvy Floren, R-149th District.
"My goal is to see that when I leave, I left it better than when I found it," Tesei said of his political goals.
