STAMFORD, Conn. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged Linda McMahon's supporters to make sure she is elected to the U.S. Senate as he stopped at a campaign event at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa on Monday afternoon.

“You do not want me to go 'Jersey' on you people,” Christie said, joking that he would be back if U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, defeated the Republican businesswoman.

There are two types of politicians, Christie said: Those who want to be something and those who want to do something. McMahon has said what she wants to do if elected to the Senate, which her opponent has not done, he said.

“Well too bad Congressman Murphy, we don’t want that type of senator,” Christie said. “If we believe Washington, D.C., is broken, then why the heck would we give one of the people who broke it a promotion?”

He cited his own experience as a Republican elected in a historically Democratic state and going across the aisle to get his initiatives done. McMahon has worked with people of both parties in business to get things done, where Murphy has not worked with Republicans, Christie said.

“Let’s face it, he might as well be Nancy Pelosi’s butler,” Christie said of Murphy’s support of the Speaker of the House and Democratic Party initiatives.

Christie and McMahon stressed the importance of taking part in the campaign. People telling friends, family and neighbors about candidates makes more of an impact than lawn signs and phone calls, Christie said.

Christie also participated in rallies for McMahon in Waterbury and Glastonbury.

McMahon and Murphy are vying for the seat of U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., who retires at the end of this term. Election Day is Nov. 6.
