Connecticut Legislature Starts Bipartisan Group On Guns

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The Connecticut Legislature announced the creation of a bipartisan task force to tackle gun violence prevention and the safety of children.

The purpose of the task force is to conduct a review of current law and practices and make recommendations on potential legislation. That legislation will range from gun violence prevention to enhancing school security and availability of mental health services in the state.

"Our children's safety is not a partisan issue, and I am pleased to join with Democrats and Republicans in crafting a bipartisan plan to reduce violence, improve school security and address access to mental health services,” said Senate President Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, in a release.

The task force includes Democratic committee chairs and Republican ranking members, and will provide recommendations to Senate and House leadership with the goal of producing a bipartisan bill in late February.

There are three groups, which will focus on the issues of gun violence prevention, school security and mental health.

"Our response must be reasoned and well-crafted if we are to be successful in our common goals," House Republican Leader Larry Cafero, R-Norwalk, said in a release.

The first full meeting of the task force will be held Friday, Jan. 18.
