Connecticut Democrats Applaud Obama's State Of The Union Address

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut politicians praised the middle-class economic initiatives put forth by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address Tuesday night to help working families get ahead.

“President Obama unveiled a clear agenda to help middle-class families and rebuild our nation’s aging infrastructure," Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement. “Right now, we are seeing the best period of private sector job growth in decades. ... We must continue to build on that momentum so that all of our citizens benefit from the economic recovery as we lay a foundation for a strong middle class for generations to come.

“President Obama tonight proposed ideas that will amplify and enhance what we’re doing in Connecticut.  ... We must put petty partisanship aside in Washington and act now.  The middle class can’t afford to wait any longer.”

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) echoed that sentiment.

“I hope the nation is inspired by the president’s call for investing in America and expanding economic opportunity. Even as our economy shows signs of recovery, our infrastructure is decaying and decrepit, and too many Americans – especially the veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan – are still left on the sidelines looking for jobs," Blumenthal said in a statement. "By investing in America, we can sustain and build an America worthy of our children and grandchildren, and put people back to work.”

Connecticut Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo applauded the proposals in Obama’s address.

“Tonight, President Obama laid out his proposals to continue moving this country in the right direction – with responsible and smart initiatives that will continue strengthening our economy, growing our middle class, and keeping our nation competitive in today’s global economy,” DiNardo said.

U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5th District) called on Democrats and Republicans to work together on the president's proposals.

“Many of the priorities President Obama mentioned tonight enjoy strong support from Republicans in Congress and in states across the country. Partisanship cannot be an excuse for inaction in Congress. There are areas of common ground around manufacturing, workforce training, rebuilding our transportation infrastructure, and investing in education. I am optimistic and energized to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on these critical issues to move our country forward.”
