Clinton Blames Westport's Comey For Losing Race For Presidency

WESTPORT, Conn. — Hillary Clinton is blaming her loss in the presidential election on F.B.I. Director James Comey of Westport, who in the last days of the campaign said he had revived an inquiry into her use of a private email server, according to the New York Times.

Clinton, who conceded Wednesday to Republican Donald Trump, made the statements about Comey during a call to donors on Saturday, according to the New York Times.

The controversy over Clinton's use a private email server at her home while she was secretary of state re-erupted after Comey's announcement that he had sent a letter to Congress about the issue. He sent a second letter two days before Election Day clearing her.

But Clinton said the damage was done, and the campaign could not recover its momentum, according to the Times. Clinton said the reminder of the email issue had a negative impact with many voters, the Times said.

Controversy also swirled for days around Comey, who ultimately said that Clinton should not face any charges over her handling of classified information, which is what he had also announced over the summer.

President Barack Obama appointed Comey, a Republican, to be FBI director in 2013. Comey had earlier served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from January 2002 to December 2003 and as the U.S. Deputy Attorney General from December 2003 to August 2005.

In August 2005, Comey became general counsel and senior vice president of Lockheed Martin. In 2010, he became general counsel at Westport-based Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund. In early 2013, he left Bridgewater to become a Senior Research Scholar and a Hertog Fellow on National Security Law at Columbia Law School in New York City.
