Astorino Says Focus Is On Re-Election, Not Run For Governor

YONKERS, N.Y. – Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is not ruling out a run for the governor’s mansion in 2014.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said Tuesday his focus is re-election in November, not the governor's mansion.

But for now, Astorino said the only election he was concerning himself with was the race for county executive in November.

“I’m not ruling anything in or out,” he said Tuesday after a Town Hall meeting in Yonkers. “But the only thing I’m concerned about and the only thing I’m focused on is running for re-election.”

Talk about Astorino’s potential run for the state’s top position was fueled this week when New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox told Gannett’s Albany bureau that Astorino was one of five state Republicans considering a run for governor.

Cox noted Astorino’s ability to win office in the primarily Democratic Westchester County as a plus for the GOP as it looks for a candidate to challenge Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to the report.

The county executive said Tuesday the speculation was flattering but insisted he is focused on the job at hand.

“What other people say or suggest is nice, but it’s not my concern right now,” Astorino said.

“I really have my work cut out for me this year,” he added. “There’s a lot of issues I have to deal with and I’m focused on the county and I’m focused on the election in November.”
