The incident began at about 5:45 p.m. when the mall general manager contacted security about a group of youths being loud, disruptive and using vulgar language on the mall's fourth level, police said. When security guards arrived, the 11-year-old spat in the face of the security guard, police said.
Police said they were called when the group began yelling and cursing outside the mall at pedestrians as they walked by.
A 16-year-old was charged with second-degree breach of peace and interfering with an officer. The teen also had involvement with police on the weekend when he and two others allegedly stole a scooter from a residence, police said. When officers went to his home that evening and told his mother they were searching for them in connection with the theft, she told them they could keep her son, police said.
Police said the 11-year-old who spat at the security officer is the brother of the 16-year-old. A 15-year-old girl, who lives the same address as the 16-year-old and 11-year-old, was also charged with breach of peace. Three other youths, a 15-year-old and two 13-year-old girls were also charged with breach of peace, police said.
Their names were not released due to their ages.
