But instead of a snowplow, the officer saw an even stranger sight: a car with two blown-out right tires grinding against the Hamilton Avenue pavement at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.

The driver then nearly ran into a wood fence near 37 St. Roch Ave. while attempting to stop for the officer, police said.

The officer noticed what he called “a fruity odor consistent with alcoholic type beverages” emanating from the driver, who was identified as Evelina Goransson of California, police said.

She denied taking any drugs or drinking any alcohol, poice said. Goransson told the officer that she wasn’t sure how she had blown out the tires, but said that she thought she had been involved in an accident somewhere, police said. However, she was unsure where the accident had taken place, police said.

A search of her vehicle turned up a half-full one liter bottle of cognac and a half pill of what was discovered to be Ritalin, police said.

Goransson, 21, of 620 W. Putierrez St., Santa Barbara, was charged with operating while under the influence, operating with unsafe tires, failure to keep drugs in original container and possession of a controlled substance.

She posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Dec. 29.
