Master Patrol Officer JD Smith and Sgt. John Slusarz were honored by Greenwich Police Chief James Heavey.
"The highest calling of a police officer is to preserve life, and the efforts of you and your fellow officers in this incident are a true testament to your dedication to this principle," Heavey said in a statement. "On behalf of the patient, his family, and the Greenwich Community, thank you for a job well done."
Smith was dispatched to the call, and Slusarz, who was off duty at the time, also responded to the scene. They found that one of the man's arms was nearly severed just below the elbow. The two officers immediately gave first aid and applied a tourniquet to the "patient, who was rapidly declining," police said in a statement.
The patient was transported to the hospital, where the attending surgeon credited the rapid medical intervention in not only saving the patient's life but also with saving his limb, police said.
