Stamford Police Warn Of Increase In 'Card Cracking' Scams

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Police are warning about an increase in "Card Cracking" scams where scammers are offering quick cash in exchange for debit cards and pin numbers.

Police said that Card Cracking is an updated twist on identity theft, but where victims are often willing participants. Conspirators use social media and other methods to advertise quick cash returns for cards and PIN numbers. Once obtained, they deposit fraudulent checks into the accounts through ATMs, and within hours they then withdraw the funds at another ATM, police said.

"If someone on social media advertises 'free money' or 'money transfer' and they then ask you to send them a copy of your debit card or give up your debit card DO NOT DO IT. This is a scam and a crime," Stamford Police warned.

"Never provide your bank information and PIN number to anyone besides someone at your bank. If you give your debit card to someone else you may be held liable for bank fraud and end up having to owe the bank money. You also open yourself up to potential criminal charges."
