Stamford Man's Suicide Attempt Foiled In Church Parking Lot

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Quick thinking parishioners called police after noticing that a man parked on their church's property was trying to commit suicide by venting exhaust into his vehicle Monday morning, Stamford Police said.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. when parishioners at the North Stamford Congregational Church at 31 Cascade Road in North Stamford noticed the man sitting in his vehicle in the church's parking lot, police said.

The man had attached flexible duct tubing to the exhaust pipe and ran it into the passenger compartment of his SUV and closed the window, police said. 

The 57-year-old Stamford man got out of the vehicle when officers arrived and was transported to Stamford Hospital for treatment, police said. Police found a suicide note in the vehicle.
