Officer Robert Macari and Officer William Garay were each charged with conduct unbecoming of an officer, a statement from Police Chief Jonathan Fontneau said Wednesday. Macari will be suspended for 30 days without pay and Garay for 10 days without pay, the statement said.
Both have been relieved of active duty since May 16 after the issue was brought to the chief’s attention, the release said. The police internal affairs department and the state’s attorney conducted an investigation and determined there was no cause to arrest either officer, the statement said.
Both officers had been text-messaging inappropriately with the 17-year-old and Internal Affairs deemed it a violation of the department’s rules and regulations, the release said. The girl alleged that she was involved with Macari, and it was later learned that Garay was involved with her as well, the statement said.
“This investigation has shown that the actions of both officers have led to a breakdown in the public trust, which is critical in our profession. It is expected that each member of the Stamford Police Department will garner the public’s confidence through sound judgment and ethical conduct,” Fontneau said in the statement.
Macari, 43, has been with the department for 11 years and Garay, 28, has been with the department for six years, the statement said.
