The incident began when an officer on patrol at Stamford High School saw a 1997 Toyota Corolla parked near a fence with its lights on, police said. The officer pulled up and the male and female occupants tried to get out of the vehicle but were ordered by the officer to return to the car, Sgt. Sean McGowan said.

The officer could smell marijuana and asked whether they had any drugs, McGowan said. The male passenger said they smoked all the marijuana they had, he said.

After checking the car's license plate numbers, the officer discovered the car had just been reported stolen, McGowan said.

The officer got the male suspect out of the car, but the teen refused to be handcuffed, police said. He tossed something to the female passenger and told her not to let the officer have it, McGowan said.

Unsure of what the item was, the officer pulled put his firearm and shined a light from a flashlight on the bottom of its barrel onto the female passenger while restraining the male with his other hand, McGowan said.

The officer then saw that the item was a cellphone, McGowan said. He was able to handcuff the male and assisted another officer who had just arrived in handcuffing the female, who was also uncooperative, police said.

Endeja Tatyana Whyte, 18, of 193 Ursula Place, was charged with resisting arrest, conspiracy to resist arrest and third-degree larceny. A 16-year-old male was also handed the same charges. He was turned over to his parents. Whyte was held on $10,000 bond for an appearance in state Superior Court in Stamford on Monday. Police didn't release the 16-year-old's name because he was under 18 years of age.
